Spreading the word about the excitement of the team..Fans meeting the players...Players meeting the fans...Helping out the community...
Sure, a professional basketball game is full of exciting on-court action, but did you ever realize how much activity takes place off the court? Besides promoting and marketing the team through contests and special giveaways, a professional sports team has a responsibility to the people of the community who cheer them on.
Fans and teams have what is called a symbiotic relationship, which means that both sides depend on the other. The fans love having an exciting team to watch and cheer on. The team, meanwhile, needs the fans to buy tickets and support the businesses that sponsor the team.
To help draw new fans and keep the older ones coming back again and again, the organization does marketing and publicity. The team also has a public relations department that works hard to get stories about the team into the newspapers and onto television and radio programs to draw fan interest.
But not everything is done from the team's headquarters. Marketing also means going out to the neighborhoods of the city and meeting and greeting the fans. This is called field marketing.
Another way of attracting fans and giving something back to the community, as a way of saying thank you for your support, is by helping and supporting children and families through difficult times. Community outreach is a means in which players, coaches and staff members meet the fans through activities and special programs. Just as the community cheers the team on, the team cheers for the people of New York, helping kids lean to read or taking part in community improvement efforts.
Back inside The Garden, plenty of activities take place around the game itself. The game night staff helps make sure that all game time presentations run smoothly, including contests, music, video highlights and half time entertainment. The Knicks City Dancers also help pump up the excitement during the games through well-choreographed, high-energy dance routines.
In the end, there are a lot of people all throughout the organization handling exciting off-the-court jobs in order to help put together each action-packed Knicks basketball season.
