August 6, 2009 - Celebrating the Knicks Read to Achieve @powertolearn.com Presented by Kia Motors, former NBA-star John Starks, who hit more than 1,000 three-pointers in his career, was joined at the S. Norwalk Public Library by Congressman Jim Himes and Mayor Richard Moccia to read excerpts from Sienna’s Scrapbook, a book authored and illustrated by Toni Trent Parker, to the children, parents and attending guests. The children then took part in a fun, interactive “Knicks Postcard Club” comprehension quiz about Sienna’s Scrapbook, received autographs, and participated in Knicks ticket giveaways and raffles.

“Literacy is vital to success and today’s ‘Knicks Read to Achieve @ powertolearn.com’ event delivered that message in a positive and engaging way,” said Congressman Himes. “Thanks to Cablevision, the New York Knicks and Kia Motors, the children here today have been able to participate in a truly innovative literacy program, that will hopefully foster a love of reading for years to come.”

Mayor Moccia concurred, noting, “Programs like Knicks Read to Achieve @powertolearn.com are helpful in promoting the joys of reading to students at an early age. These children are sure to benefit from this experience that introduces them to great children’s literature and also allows them to interact with inspiring professional athletes.”
